Abstract
In the production of artificial silk from regenerated cellulose by the wet spinning process, the spun thread is introduced at a speed of more than 60 metres per minute into a centrifuge revolving at normal speed, i.e. from 5000 to 8000 revolutions per minute, and the cake after washing or other treatment is brought with twisting directly into marketable form such as a bottle-bobbin, cross-wound bobbin, cop, or pirn. In this manner, the twisting, produced in spinning into the centrifuge, which is insufficient for many purposes, is supplemented by a second twisting. The cake may be subjected to liquid treatments either in the centrifuge or after removal therefrom and it may be wrapped in porous fabric or other permeable covering for protection. For the subsequent twisting, the cake may be replaced in the spinning can which is rotated at normal speed while the silk is drawn off. In order to obtain a variably twisted product, the spinning speed or the speed of unwinding may be caused to vary.
