Abstract

366,947. Oil engines ; actuating- materials. HELMORE, W., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. Oct. 3, 1930, No. 29618. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] In a compressionignition engine, a primer is introduced into the engine cylinder separately from, and in advance of, the fuel oil. It is mixed with the intake air and may comprise a non- explosive solution in a non-explosive volatile solvent. The supply is controlled simultaneously with the supply of fuel oil or by the suction of the intake air. In apparatus as shown in the Figure, ethyl nitrate dissolved in ethyl alcohol is fed past a needle valve 3 to the air intake 1. The needle valve 3 is regulated by a lever 6 which is controlled either by a piston 8 acted on by the engine suction or by a link 11 connected to the fuel supply. According to a modification, the primer is fed into the air intake by a retractable wick exposed to the flow of the intake air. The primer may be used intermittently. Suitable primers are methyl or ethyl nitrate, or butyl or amyl nitrite. Specifications 294,129, [Class 91, Oils &c.], and 352,550 are referred to.
