Abstract

365,048. Ventilators. GALBRAITH, A. and ANEMOSTAT (SCOTLAND), Ltd., 247, West George Street, Glasgow. Oct. 11, 1930, No. 30491. [Class 137.] In a ventilator of the type comprising a number of partitions arranged one within another to provide a plurality of passages which increase in area from one end to the other, one or more of the partitions is or are adjustable at will relatively to the inlet to the ventilator. As shown in Fig. 1, the ventilator comprises five coaxial conical partitions of which the outer one 25 is connected to a tubular inlet 26 and supports by means of stays 32 the adjacent partition 24. The three inner partitions 21, 22, 23 are connected together by stays 30 and may be adjusted axially as a unit bv means of a thumb-piece 31 on the lower end of a screwed spindle 29 working in a screwed bush 28 attached to the inlet tube 26. A sleeve 36 may be provided on the inlet tube to form a hit-and-miss valve through the apertures of which air from the enclosure may be entrained. The inner ends of the partitions are bent over to form a beaded edge 35 of substantially stream line form to reduce the noise of the incoming air. In a modified form, Fig. 5, the adjustable unit comprises four connected partitions, the inner being fixed to a tubular member 40 which forms 'a seat for a ball 41 at the end of the screwed rod 29. By means of a thumb-piece 31 and a nut 42 the adjustable partitions may be turned and clamped in an angular position. The upper end of the spindle 29 carries a plate 43 adapted to close the inlet when the partitions are fully extended. In another modification the four adjustable partitions are carried by a system of pivoted links acting on the lazytongs principle. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the adjustable partitions are detachably mounted by means of slotted bars 85 hinged at their upper ends to brackets 84 on the partition 24 and at their lower ends retained by a ring 86. This unit is carried by three vertical stays 56, two of which are 180‹ apart and the third midway between. Each stay carries at its upper end a stud 57 which projects through a sloping slot 61 in the wall of the inlet. The unit can thus be raised or lowered by a rotating movement and is held in adjusted position by springs 59. That slot which is 90‹ from each of the other two is also provided with vertical branch slots 62. By allowing the corresponding stud to move down one of the branch slots, the partitions may be angularly adjusted. One of the studs 57 is also arranged to actuate a valve comprising two semicircular flaps 76, 77 pivoted about an axis 78. As the stud moves up the slot 61 it engages and moves a rod 79 connected directly to the flap 76 and through a system of levers to the flap 77. The inlet tube 26 is shown lined with felt 88. Specification 330,270, [Class 137, Ventilation], is referred to.
