364,935. Typewriters. ROYALTYPEWRITER CO., Inc., 2, Park Avenue, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Graepel, W.; 514, Fairview Avenue, Ridgewood, New York, U.S.A.) March 17, 1931, No. 8216. Convention date, April 1, 1930. [Class 100 (iv).] Paper-carriages; carriage-releasing arrangements.-Shipping-locks for preventing vertical and horizontal movement of the carriage in machines having carriage-shift mechanism comprise a releasable hook-member for engaging the platen shaft and the bottom of the framework, and a pin adapted to enter holes in the fixed and movable carriage-rails. The machine shown in the Figure comprises a carriage C mounted on a shift frame B and provided with a feed-rack 18 which co-operates with a pinion 17 and can be disengaged by means of finger-levers 20. To condition the machine for shipping, the carriage is centred, and the carriage and the shift frame are raised to relieve the shift-mechanism, shouldered blocks 27 being placed between the carriage and the top 21 of the framework A to hold the ,parts in raised position. Vertical movement of the carriage is prevented by applying locking- members E having hooks 25, 24 for engaging the platen shaft 10 and the bottom 22 of the framework. The members may have hooks 26 for engaging the finger-levers 20 to hold disengaged the feed-rack. Horizontal movement of the carriage is prevented by means of a U-shaped locking-member F having short and long pins 34, 35 adapted to be passed through holes in the fixed and movable carriage-rails 8, 7. The locking-member embraces the carriage-stop D and the pin 34 is formed with a retaining-bend. A tag is attached by a cord to the locking-member. '
