Abstract
Variegated colouring is applied to the surface of an article such as a rubber or other ball by bringing it into contact with or passing it through the surface of a liquid to which has been applied one or more liquid colouring-materials, the liquid being immiscible with the colouring-material and acting to split up the colouring-material into a number of parts and cause the parts to be dispersed, as distinct from a spreading-action wherein the material remains as a continuous film. The colouring-materials may consist of pigments or dyes in rubber solution, oils, varnishes, cellulose, spirit, or the like, and the liquid may be water rendered alkaline as by the addition of a small amount of washing-soda. The ornamentation of a ball may be improved by turning it horizontally to and fro as it is passed through the surface of the liquid. After colouring, the balls are preferably varnished.
