Abstract
A hard metallic surface is formed on a refractory heat-insulating body, e.g. an engine cylinder, by depositing a thin film of metal thereon in situ. The surface is first rendered electroconductive by one of the following methods, viz.:-(a) by burnishing the surface with a conductor, e.g. silver, copper, nickel, iron or graphite; (b) by precipitating a metal film; (c) coating the surface with an amalgam, or a salt, e.g. silver nitrate, which is readily volatile, nickel carbonyl, or iron carbonyl, and heating the same. A lining of silver, copper, iron, chromium or nickel is then electrically deposited thereon. If the cylinder is to be subjected to very high temperatures, after nickel has been deposited a mixture of powdered chromium and aluminium is applied and the whole heated in a reducing atmosphere to about 2400 DEG F. Alternatively chromium and nickel are deposited by subsequent processes and the whole heated until an alloy is formed. The refractory material may be bonded zircon.
