Abstract

Magnesium is produced from magnesium oxide by reduction by a metal with a melting-point above 1600 DEG C. The oxide is heated with the metal, e.g. tungsten, and a proportion of carbon to produce an atmosphere of carbon monoxide. Magnesium volatilizes and is condensed. Tungsten oxide formed in the process is reduced by a reducing gas such as hydrogen to metallic tungsten to which further quantities of magnesium oxide are added for reduction. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the employment of a high-frequency induction furnace for the reduction. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
