361,344. Tanning processes. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Merritt, M. M. ; Middleton, Massachu. setts, U.S.A.) Aug. 12, 1930, No. 24085. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1929. [Class 76.] Hides &c. are treated with tanning material while in a slicked-out condition or otherwise extended, for instance as by a putting-out machine. The treatment is effected at atmospheric pressure and with exposure to air. The tanning is continued sufficiently for the superficial layer of the leather to become set and where the process is applied to slicked-out hides the hides are then reversed and treated on the other side. The tanning material may be applied by a spray, brush or swab or by a superposed layer of granular material or a sheet of fabric saturated with solution. Strong solutions of tanning materials are employed and the process may be assisted by hanging up the treated hides &c. to dry or allowing them to dry in slicked-out condition. After one or more treatments of the kind described a finishing tanning may be applied in known manner, e.g. by means of a drum.
