Abstract
Cellulosic materials such as cornstalks, sawdust, bagasse, are disintegrated, digested with alkali, acidified to precipitate resins &c. on the fibres, washed to remove soluble bye-products, dried, powdered, mixed with an alkaline substance such as calcium hydroxide, and moulded under heat and pressure. According to an example, 6 lbs. of sawdust, 2 lbs. of sodium hydroxide, and 1 gal. of water, are treated with steam at 160 lbs. pressure for 3-4 hours in a digester. 3 1/2 lbs. concentrated sulphuric acid in 3-4 gals. of water are added, and the mass is filtered and washed. After drying at 80 DEG C., 5-40 per cent of calcium, barium or strontium hydrate is added and the mixed mass is moulded at 3000 lbs. pressure at 150-160 DEG C. Resistance to moisture is improved by finer grinding, by prolonged heating at 150 DEG C., or by the addition of small proportions of resins, natural or synthetic.
