360,193. Cleaning and polishing apparatus. SCHOFIELD, F. E. S., 78, Northampton Road, Croydon. Nov. 7, 1930, No. 33469. [Classes 19 and 138 (i).] A portable cleaning and polishing apparatus, Fig. 1, for domestic use, for floors, furniture, grates, cutlery, glass, and household utensils, comprises a motor 1 with a driving shaft 2A, Fig. 2, fitted with a sleeve 3 having a threaded collar 4 and a holder plate 5 separated by a spring 11 to impart pressure to brushes &c., the holder plate having fingers 6 to drop into slots or recesses in the brush, thereby detachably securing it to the motor. The threaded collar 4 permits regulation of the tension of the spring. On the end of the shaft 2A is a pivoted bracket 14 carrying a roller 13 which prevents undue pressure on the brush or pad, correct pressure being maintained by the spring 11. The brush may consist of a wood head 31, Fig. 4, with cover-plate 7 and strips of cloth &c. 10 glued or otherwise secured to bristles 9 to prevent undue spreading under centrifugal force. A polishing pad, Fig. 1, may consist of layers of cloth 34, leather, or other suitable material cemented into a compact pad and impregnated with polishing compound. The material may be secured by wire pins 35. In cleaning floors, the handle 16 may be provided with an extension 19. A dust box 22, Fig. 5, may be spring- clipped at 20 to a plate 15 on the motor. In the bottom of the dust box are rollers 23A, 23B, Fig. 6A, sufficiently large to tilt the brush 9 till the rear edge 24, Fig. 5A, is clear of the floor -and can enter the box. The roller 25B is slightly the larger to give a subsidiary tilt so that the brush will give most sweeping action at the edge 25. The form of brush, Fig. 10, is for polishing non-horizontal or non- symmetrical surfaces such as firegrates, chairs, &c. The roller 13 is out of use with this form and the spring 11 fully extended. Where it is desired to hold an article in the hand while being cleaned, the machine may be clamped to a table by plates 15, 15A, Fig. 11.
