Abstract
In the washing of flue gases containing a low percentage of sulphur dioxide and trioxide, the gases are treated with a suspension of milk of lime, the sulphur being precipitated as insoluble compounds of lime. In a two-stage process, sufficient lime is present in the first stage only to form calcium bisulphite and bisulphate, the normal salts being precipitated in the second stage on addition of further lime. Carbonates of lime may replace milk of lime in the washing liquor. Specification 311,249, [Class 55 (ii), Gas manufacture &c.], is referred to.
