Abstract

Microporous rubber is rendered non-inflammable by incorporating in the mix an inorganic salt which forms a coating on the walls of the cells. Suitable salts are sodium bicarbonate, ammonium sulphate and ammonium phosphate. These are added in an example in amounts of 20-30 per cent of the weight of a dough containing 55-60 per cent of rubber, the product being expanded 12 times its original bulk by vulcanizing under high gas pressure.
