[Class 100 (i).] Associating - apparatus ; c u t t i n gapparatus.-In a newspaper-printing press, separate sheets are inserted in the product by feeding a web w<1> into engagement with one or more webs w running at a higher speed, and separating the slower web into sheets while registering the sheets at their rear end in engagement with the faster web or webs. The web w<1> is fed between half. speed cutting-cylinders 11, 12 forming transverse slits or perforations, and is shown as passing between two full-speed webs w to a folder 10 and a cutting and folding cylinder 9. The forward end of the slower web is nipped against the other webs by rollers 24, 25 to effect separation of the sheet along the line of perforations, and simultaneously the slower web is momentarily nipped near the line of perforations between a roller 23 and a lower roller 20 having a spring-seated section 22, to prevent rebound of the leading edge of the web and maintain register. In another arrangement, rebound is obviated by providing a second cutting-couple arranged in place of the nipping- rollers 20, 23 to cut between the first series of slits to sever the sheet. A further provision for maintaining register consists in perforating the superposed webs and sheet by blunt pins on one of the high-speed forwarding-rollers, in the transverse margin across the leading edge of the sheet, or in the longitudinal margins, or in both the transverse and longitudinal margins, so that the webs and sheet are sealed together.
