Abstract

Benzenesulphonic acid or a homologue, derivative or salt thereof is subjected to alkali fusion with the exclusion of air, such as under reduced pressure especially in the presence of an inert gas such as nitrogen. A water bath may be used to ensure accurate temperature control. The fusion product, preferably after the addition of sufficient free phenol to neutralize the excess of caustic soda, may be dissolved in water to give a solution of phenolate containing sulphite.
