Abstract

358,503. Measuring heat quantities. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. July. 5, 1930, No. 20466. Convention date, July 6, 1929. [Class 97 (iii).] Counter gearing indicating the quantity of heat carried by a fluid is driven by a pivoted oscillating member of which the frequency of movement depends on a quantity meter and the extent of movement depends on the continuously present throw of a temperature difference indicator. In the form shown, the temperature sensitive resistances or thermo couples 4, 5, in the supply and return conduits 1, 3 respectively are arranged in the bridge circuit 6 and deflect the pointer 11 of an electrical measuring instrument 7 in accordance with the difference in temperature between the fluid in the conduits 1, 3. A quantity meter 2, in the conduit 1 closes with each revolution a contact 8 in the circuit of an electromagnet 9. The armature 21 of the electromagnet 9 actuates through a lever 22 a spring-urged pivoted drop loop 10. The frequency of movement of the drop loop 10 thus depends on the quantity of fluid flowing in the conduit 1 and the extent of each movement is made by the engagement of a cam 12 on the drop loop with the needle 11 to depend on the temperature difference in the conduits 1, 3. A toothed segment 16 fixed to the drop loop is adapted through ratchet and pawl mechanism 18, 19 to actuate a counter 20. A temperature scale 14 may be provided to enable the needle 11 to indicate the temperature difference. The needle 11 may carry a recording pen adapted to contact with a clockwork driven paper strip with each drop loop movement. The quantity of fluid flowing may also be indicated separately by a tally actuated by the closures of the contact 8 or by the movements of the drop loop. In a modification in which errors due to running on of the ratchet wheel 18 after the termination of the pawl movement are eliminated, the upward return movements of the drop loop are measured and' the pawl movement is made to terminate always at a fixed point at which a stop engages the pawl 19 pressing it against and thus damping the motion of the ratchet wheel 18. The device may be used with hot water or steam heaters or in determinations of latent heat of gases.
