Abstract

For identifying ropes (including cords and braided tapes), a substance adapted to manifest its presence when subjected to chemical change, or to heat, is incorporated in the rope or in one of the strands thereof. The substances employed include (1) organic indicators, such as phenolphthalein, fluorescein, p-nitrophenol, thymolphthalein, tetrabrom-phenolphthalein, litmus, turmeric, Methyl red, Methyl orange, Aniline red, lacmoid, soluble indigo, and Poirrier's blue, which give colour changes with acid or alkaline treatment, (2) inorganic compounds, such as potassium iodide, ammonium or potassium sulphocyanate, potassium ferro- or ferri-cyanide, lead acetate, ammonium or potassium molybdate, which give coloured precipitates with appropriate reagents, and (3) compounds such as lithium chloride which give flames of predetermined colour when a portion of the rope containing the indicator is burnt.
