Abstract

357,138. Stabilizing ships. GES FœR ELEKTRISCHE APPARATE, Marienfelde, Berlin. June 14, 1930, No. 18263. Convention date, July 4, 1929. [Class 113 (i).] In arrangements for damping rolling or pitching by means of carriages of large mass which are reciprocated athwart or fore and aft ship, in opposition to the respective motions, the motor 1 driving the carriage is operated from a main switch 33 which is displaced by a rolling-angle indicator 5 through the auxiliary motor 4 and the bevel gearing shown to contact successively with the contacts 30, 32 which with the resistances 29, 31, as well as the field circuit 26. lie in the current circuit 27, 28. With the ship on an even keel, this voltage control suffices to minimize the rolling motion. Should the vessel have a list, the motion of the carriages becomes unbalanced and this is corrected by passing the movements of the carriage through the synchronous motor 9, as well as those of the rolling-angle motor to a screw 1 on which a nut 12 works. Supported from the nut by springs 13, 14, a damping cylinder 15 carries an arm 20 with a brush 21 which works across an auxiliary switch 3 also in the main current circuit. If owing to the unilateral movements of the carriage, the movements of the nut are persistently greater in one direction than the other, the cylinder is displaced against the action of the springs and the brush 21 of the voltage distributer 3 moves away from its central position and the unbalanced movement of the carriage is corrected. The adjustment of the brush can also be effected by the hand controls 24, 22, and the carriages can also be subjected to the control 7 which is influenced by the velocity of the angle of roll.
