Abstract
In the manufacture of soaps containing potato as the chief ingredient, a potato mash is used which is made by boiling the potatoes with dilute sulphuric acid, the boiled mass being passed through a press. The resulting pulp is agitated with weak alkali and after standing the surplus liquid is decanted leaving a mash as residue. The mash is boiled with caustic potash lye, evaporated water being replaced, and palm oil or similar fat suitable for soap manufacture, is added together with a further quantity of caustic lye containing a small amount of tetrethyl ammonium hydroxide. After saponification is complete, casein dissolved in boiling water containing caustic ammonia is incorporated. After standing the supernatant liquor is drawn off and the soap is passed into a cooling form.
