[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii).] Apparatus for detwisting gummed - yarn comprises a rotatable roller 23 engaged by the yarn which centres the yarn passing to the detwisting element which maintains the yarn under tension and which, with the roller 23, defines the length of yarn strand wherein substantial detwisting occurs. Yarn B from a beam, or from spools, pirns, cones, bobbins, cheeses, &c., having one or more ends wound thereon, is passed through a warm gumming medium, through squeezing rollers over a drying drum and wound on beams, spools, &c., 12, Fig. 2, from which it is subsequently drawn and the gum &c. softened as by water 19, a guide-rod or roller 17 of glass &c. and eyes 19a directing it over a roller 18 preferably of non-corrosive metal. The yarn B passes between rollers 20 to the guide-roller 23 which has preferably a periphal groove 22, Fig. 2a, for each strand B and is rotated in either direction, preferably with and at the surface speed of the yarn, the yarn contacting with the roller 23 vertically over the axis of the detwisting spindle 28 which is driven by a belt 31 and has a traversed ring traveller 34. A groove-cleaning device 26, which is weighted at 26a carries a detachable sleeve 27 for removing dirt, lint, &c., from the roller 23. The yarn may pass straight from the gumming medium to the detwisting spindle without being wound on the spools &c. 12 or being softened by water &c. In an example the twist is reduced from 17 to 5 turns per inch.
