Abstract
356,196. Variable speed gearing; chains. PESCHL, F. A., Jackson Heights, New York, U.S.A. June 2, 1930, No. 17043. [Class 80 (ii).] Expanding pulleys have internal radial teeth spring- pressed outwardly to engage teeth carried by an endless chain. The pulley teeth 7 are acted upon by springs 21 and the chain teeth 10 to reciprocate in recesses 15 in the body 11 of the pulleys. Arms 21a on the teeth 7 extend laterally through slots 12a in the pulley flanges and carry rollers 23 to engage cams 24 by which the teeth are retracted at X and allowed to project at Y to engage the teeth of the chain. The effective diameters of the pulleys are varied by means of levers 27, 28 pivoted on stands 30 to standards 31. The ends of the levers are journalled on sleeves mounted loosely on the hubs of the pulley discs, the levers being operated by means of a cross shaft 36 carrying oppositely threaded vertical yokes 39. An idler tension roller 47 downwardly pressed by springs 50 may be provided. A link of the chain is shown in Fig. 5. Bevelled lugs 44 on one link are pivoted to inner lugs 45 of the next link. The driving teeth are formed by converging planes 43. The springs 21 may be dispensed with and centrifugal force relied upon to urge the teeth 7 outwards.
