Abstract
Flocculent pigments such as lampblack are deflocculated by treatment with a small amount of an aqueous solution of an amphoteric colloid, which has been treated with acid or alkali according to the nature of the pigment under treatment. In the case of carbon pigments the p<H> value of the colloid should be brought to a value of 8 or 9, while for pigments which are dispersed in acid solution a p<H> value of 4-6 is suitable. The treated pigment may be heated to evaporate the solvent, and may finally be subjected to a trituration process which increases its apparent density. According to an example, lampblack is mixed with 1 per cent of gelatine in aqueous solution, to which ammonia has been added to give a p<H> value of 8. The mixing is effected in a kneading machine and at the end of the treatment the temperature is allowed to rise to vaporize the water, after which the material may be further triturated in the same machine.
