[Class 94 (ii).] Shaped gumming is applied to the closure flaps of envelopes &c. by first applying the gum by a spreading process while the blanks are arranged in stepped relationship with only the closure flaps exposed and then making a second application by a stamp or type to produce the desired shape. Pairs of rollers 3, 4, 5 draw blanks from a pile 2 and place them in overlapping relationship with only the closure flaps exposed prior to pairs of cooperating bands 8, 8<1>, which pass around drums 6 and over a curved table 23, feeding them past a gum-spreading device 14 adapted to apply the gum to the parts shown in Fig. 2 by vertical hatching. The bands 8, 8<1> pass the gummed blanks on to a pair of bands 15<1> moving at a higher speed and as each blank is released by the bands 8, 8<1>, a rotating roller 16 is lowered on to it to separate the blank from the remaining blanks, the arrangement preventing any irregularities in the spacing of the blanks from being magnified by their acceleration. A pair of bands 15 co-operates with the bands 15<1> to feed the blanks past a rotary gummer 27 comprising units 24<11>, 25<11>, 26<11>, Fig. 5, adjustable along and around a shaft 27<1> and adapted to apply gum to the portions 24, 25, 26 of the closure flap to produce the desired shape. The shaft 27<1> may be angularly adjusted in relation to the path of the blanks. The type units 24<11>, 25<11>, 26<11> operate against an adjustable support 30 comprising arms hinged at the middle and adjustable by a screw to allow for the different thickness of the blanks passing the roller. Finally, the blanks are closed up, as far as the gummed portions will permit, and dried between bands 38.
