Abstract
Organic derivatives of cellulose, of cellulose transformation products or of other carbohydrates are esterified by treatment with a free carboxylic acid or mixture of such acids in the presence of liquid sulphur dioxide. As condensing agents, the known substances may be used; sulphuric acid may be produced by a limited oxidation of the sulphur dioxide. The velocity of the reaction may be increased by increasing the pressure due to the use of sulphur dioxide by the addition of an inert gas or of compressed air. In examples, (I) diethyl cellulose is esterified in the presence of liquid sulphur dioxide by means of formic acid, (2) a cellulose aceto-butyrate is obtained from a partially acetylate cellulose and butyric acid in the presence of liquid sulphur dioxide and of sulphuric acid as catalyst, (3) methyl cellulose is swollen in liquid sulphur dioxide and esterified by acetic acid in the presence of chromic anhydride, the pressure being raised by the addition of nitrogen, (4) hydroxypropyl starch is stirred with liquid sulphur dioxide, zinc chloride and acetic acid. The esters and etheresters of cellulose may be worked up into threads or films by the processes of Specifications 348,931 and 348,959.
