[Class 146 (i).] A letter &c. file is formed with normally fixed posts 9, Fig. 4, having fixed lugs 10, which overlap the papers to retain them in position, the papers being threaded over the posts without relative movement between the posts and the lugs. The capacity of the file may be varied by combining a plurality of sectional filing members each of which is capable of acting as a separate filing unit and can be detached from the remainder: for this purpose each filing unit comprises a resilient strip 7, having lugs 8, preferably stamped out, on its under surface, and a pair of posts 9, projecting from its upper surface, carrying the lugs 10 which not only overlap the papers but can be engaged by the lugs 8 on the superimposed strip 7. In a modification each pair of posts may be carried by a telescopic spacing member, the ends of which are spring- pressed and formed with lugs for engagement under the lugs of the under posts. Alternatively, the post sections may screw together and auxiliary guide-posts 11 may be provided. The posts may be formed by stamping a blank 26, Fig. 9, from the material of the file cover or spacing member, folding along the lines a and inserting the part 26a through a slot 29, thereby forming a post 28. In modified forms, either the projecting lug or the entire post is formed of double thickness. A retaining strip may be provided of resilient material and having spring tongues to engage the underside of the lugs 10 : side wings may be bent up out of the strip to facilitate manipulation. The ends of the strips 7 may project beyond the papers and carry index letters.
