[Class 138 (ii).] An electric steaming iron is provided with means for preheating the water prior to its entry into the steam generating chamber. The base of the iron comprises a sole plate 33, electrical heating unit 34, and pressure plate 35 held together by fastenings 26. Surmounting the pressure plate is a hot plate 27 on which is mounted a dome 10, the interior of the upper part of the dome being formed with steps which engage with plates 17, 18, 19 shaped to form narrow intercon municating channels 14, 15, 16 extending from end to end along the sides of the dome. Water is supplied from a tube 8 to one end of the uppermost passage 14 and flows backwards and forwards in a descending stream through the channels in which it is heated, being finally discharged at the rear end of the channel 16 into a steam generating chamber formed between the lowest plate 19 aid the hot plate 27. This chamber is divided into compartments 38a .. 38f by upstanding barriers 32 and a depending barrier 22. A tubular projection 39 from the sole plate 33 enters the front end of the steam chamber and conducts the steam to perforations 29 in the sole plate. To prevent condensed water passing down the projection 39 the steam is deflected downwards by the barrier 22 under a shield 11 secured to the projection 39 by a perforated cover 13 extending over the projection. The sol.e plate carries a hood 12 extending over the dome and secured to a U-shaped support 9 for a handle 6. A flexible connection 45 supplies water to a conduit 5 in the handle, a valve 3 worked by a finger-lever 1 being provided to regulate the flow from the conduit 5 and a passage 42 to a passage 43 and the tube 8. The lever 1 is provided with a spring 2 to shut off the water supply when the iron is not in use.
