Abstract
353,626. Shelling mealies. VILLIERS, L. V. DE, P.O. Box 206, Disselsrust, Bloemfontein, South Africa. June 11, 1930, No. 17909. Convention date, June 20, 1929. [Class 58.] Mealie cobs are fed by an elevator l into a hood 4 and over a guide-plate 14 into a shelling cage 5 against the side bars of which they are driven by rotary helical beaters 15. The grain drops through the bars on to an angular plate 16 that directs it clear of a second cage 19 into a hopper 17. The cobs and leaves tailing from the first cage are guided into the cage 19 and again beaten by rotary beaters, the grain falling directly into the hopper 17 and the leaves and stripped cobs being delivered into the outlet pipe 20 of a blower 40. The two cages are entirely enclosed by a casing 23 extended to form the hopper 17, this casing being connected to the inlet of the blower. The plates of the hopper are perforated and the air sucked in through these perforations carries away any remaining dust or light refuse. The grain is carried by an elevator 25 to an angular plate 26 down which it passes while air is drawn across it bv another connection to the inlet of the fan. The grain then falls into a revolving cylindrical sieve provided with perforations varying in size from one end to the other so that grading is accomplished. The graded grains are finally bagged from outlets 32. For travelling purposes the elevator 1 is carried on two bearers 34, 35 as shown in Fig. 1 ; it is lifted into working position by a rope 10 passing over a pulley 8 carried by a post 6 and is provided with studs fitting into slots 3 cut in the hood 4.
