Abstract

352,507. Screw propellers. MELCHER, F., 146, Geutzgasse, Vienna. April 10, 1930, No. 11447. [Class 114.] Screw propeller blades are formed with a rigid leading edge and with flexible resilient blade surfaces. The leading edge 1 of propeller blade 3 is formed as a gradually tapering arm 4 integral with the boss and is shaped at the rearward edge to form shoulders and may have stiffening ribs 7. The two side-plates 8, 9 are attached to the shoulder on the rib and sprung so that the rear edges are held together resiliently. Apertures 10 may be made in the frame for connecting the hollow interior with the outside. The blade plate 8 projects beyond the following edge of the pressure plate 9 and is provided at intervals along its outer edge with slits 12. Instead of single blade plates laminations may be used and the laminations may be supported by providing distance-pieces at the position of attachment to the main rib. Instead of providing a blade plate with slits it may be built up of a number of narrow metal leaves arranged in juxtaposition. The plates may be of graded tapered thickness to increase their resiliency.
