Abstract
A synthetic resin is made by heating a methylene-containing agent such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, hexamethylene-tetramine, or furfural with a hydroxy-derivative of a poly-aryl compound of the type in which two aryl rings are directly united, union being effected between a single carbon atom of each ring, as for example in the hydroxydiphenyls. The resin may also contain a fatty oil, such as tung oil. Catalysts such as sodium carbonate or hydrochloric acid may be used. Varnishes are formed by dissolving the resins in solvents such as petroleum or turpentine. Driers, novolaks, and natural resins such as rosin, colophony, copal, elemi, or mastic may be added.
