Abstract
Acetylene is produced by subjecting gaseous hydrocarbons or gases containing them to incomplete combustion with an amount of oxygen or gases containing it insufficient for complete combustion to carbon dioxide and water, in the presence of elementary silicon or substances containing it. The process is preferably carried out at pressures of 0,5 to 5 atmospheres and at temperatures of 700-1100 DEG C. Other gases, such as hydrogen or nitrogen, may be present. The acetylene may be used directly for chemical conversions such as the synthesis of acetaldehyde. In examples: (1) a mixture of 90 per cent of propane and butane with nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane is burned with air in contact with a cylinder of pressed silicon heated electrically to 850-900 DEG C.; (2) a mixture of 25 per cent of olefines, 15 per cent of hydrogen and 50 per cent of methane is similarly treated.
