Abstract
Textile filaments, threads, or yarns are sized with a polymerized or partly polymerized vinyl compound. The term "vinyl compound" includes polymerizable homologues or substitution products of simple vinyl compounds, but not rubber. Suitable vinyl compounds are vinyl alcohol or organic or inorganic esters or ethers thereof. Vinyl compounds containing free hydroxy or carboxy groups may also be used, e.g. the compounds obtainable by esterifying polyvinyl alcohol with di- or poly-carboxylic or oxycarboxylic acids, or by reacting acetylene with di- or poly-oxy compounds or with di- or poly-carboxylic or oxycarboxylic acids. The polymerization or partial polymerization of the vinyl compounds may take place wholly or in part on the materials to be sized. The vinyl compounds or their polymerization products may be applied to the materials in solution in an organic solvent or in aqueous dispersion. With the vinyl compounds there may also be applied softening agents such as oils, fatty acids, soaps, or di- or poly-hydric alcohols or their esters or ethers; diethylene glycol, olive oil and the acetins are specified as suitable. The method is particularly applicable to yarns &c. of cellulose esters or ethers or of regenerated cellulose, and is particularly directed to the sizing of such yarns &c. preparatory to weaving. The yarns &c. may be sized continuously with their production, or while travelling from one point to another. The size may be removed from the yarns &c. or from fabrics made therefrom by scouring in aqueous baths containing soaps or sulphonated soaps, with or without alcohols, hydrocarbons or other solvents, preferably after throughly wetting out the materials. In an example, cellulose acetate yarn is passed through a 5 per cent benzene solution of polymerized vinyl acetate, and then dried. Polymerized vinyl chloracetate is also specified as suitable.ALSO:Textile filaments, threads, or yarns are sized with a polymerized or partly polymerized vinyl compound.
