Abstract

346,211. Inlaid linoleum. ARMSTRONG CORK CO., Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Wiley, J. E. ; Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) May 21, 1930, No. 1566]. Convention date, May 24, 1929. [Class 140.] To obtain a pattern of greater repeat length, a die roll 3 of a rotary inlaying machine is arranged so that certain strippers 16a, 16a<1>, 16a<11> actuated by the same elenent, e.g. by the pin Sa on the scrap roll 8, discharge pieces of different size or shape. As shown, the strippers 16a<1>, 16a<11> have square heads which discharge square pieces of scrap to form gaps at X, X, Fig. 5A, and squares S<1>, S<11> are laid adjacent to these by the pattern roll 18. The stripper 16a has a similar square head but discharges a piece of scrap of twice the size, to form an oblong gap SX, and the part S of this gap is not illed by the pattern roll 18. The pattern may be completed by a further die roll or rolls, leaving squares S to be filled in by hand, as at 22, as the material passes over an inspection table. Thus the general pattern formed by the knives is repeatec. three times in the circumference of the die roll, the pattern as a whole repeats only once, and a die roll of this kind may be used with others of norma. repeat length to give a wide varietv of effects. In the machine described the roll, Fig. 2, is the second of three die rolls. The first die roll lays the pattern D<1>, Fig. 5A, with three repeats d<1>, the roll, Fig. 2, adds pattern elements including S<1>, S<11>, to form the pattern D<2> with repeat length D<2>, and the third roll completes the pattern except for the squares S. In a modification, the oblong SX lies along the circumference of the die roll instead of transversely. To facilitate the cutting and rejection of pieces of scrap larger than the head of the stripper, the cutting of the mix is completed after leaving the platen 7 by a stiff brush 7a pressing it down between the knives, and a brush 19 engages the edges of the scrap as it is pushed out by the strippers.
