344,455. Carbonization of coal. EDWARDS, E. B., 2, Minehead Road, Streatham Common, London. Dec. 6, 1929, No. 37495. [Class 55 (i).] Coal or the like is carbonized by being charged into a series of massive contiguous containers c of U or I cross-section which are moved in tight contact through a heating zone a enclosed by flues b, and may be then moved in an opposite direction through another heating zone a to complete a cyclic path. The cast iron containers, which weigh from five to ten times the weight of the charge they contain, are pushed through the heating chambers by rams d, and are transferred by arms f on a vertical shaft g from one heating zone to the other, spring loaded stops i and oscillating arms j retaining the containers in place during movement of the transfer device.
