Abstract
344,417. Preparing hides for tanning. PEACE, G., c/o National Provincial Bank, Faversham, Kent. Nov. 27, 1929, No. 36366. [Class 76.] To prepare them for rapid vegetable tanning hides and skins after a preliminary preparation of the ordinary kind are treated with a single solution in one operation to adjust them throughout to a pH value of between about 3À5 and 5À0. Hides which still contain l.me may be delimed at the same time as the adjustment of their PH value is effected. Suitable solutions for the treatment are solutions of the salts of weak acids to which mineral acids have been added or solutions of weak acids and suitable salts, e.g. a solution of acetic acid and sodium acetate, or in some cases exhausted tan liquors to which an acid is added in the necessary quantity. The acic.s to be employed are preferably those which give oluble calcium salts. A rapid tanning of hides so prepared may be effected by treatment in baths of progressively increasing strength prepared from Babul bark, Myrobalans, and Wattle bark. Specification 307,987, [Class 76, Leather], is referred to.
