Abstract

Pebble or cockle effects are produced by the treatment of a mixed fabric having its warp, or weft, or both composed of cellulose acetate or other organic derivative of cellulose and other yarns such as cotton, reconstituted cellulose, wool, or silk with a reagent causing shrinkage of such other yarns. The cellulose acetate yarns may be replaced in part by yarns of other fibres which have been treated with a shrinking agent before weaving. The two kinds of yarn may be of low and high twist, alternating in the warp, or weft, or both. In an example, yarns of an organic derivative and of low twist are used with highly-twisted yarns of natural silk. Water may be used as the shrinking agent, while water or a soda bath is used for shrinking a woollen yarn component of a fabric. When it is desired to shrink the cotton yarn component, the fabric is treated with caustic alkali without tension thereby shrinking and mercerizing the cotton and causing the other yarn of cellulose derivative to cockle. The shrinking-agent may be applied over the whole surface of the fabric or in parts only by brushing or spraying on a stencil. The resulting fabrics may be dyed to obtain solid colour or cross-dyed effects. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) was not limited to fabrics containing organic derivations of cellulose.
