Abstract
343,762. Portable drilling, screwing, &c. machines. HODEAUX, W. L., 310, 10th Street, West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S.A. Feb. 28, 1930, No. 6740. [Class 83 (iii).] Sockets.-A portable power-driven too] for drilling thread-cutting, pipe-cutting, and other operations comprises a rotary socket member which is coaxial with a worm gear driven by a worm mounted on a shaft connected either directly or through gearing to the driving shaft. The casing 1 is mounted on the end of a shank 2 leading from the casing of an electric or pneumatic motor 3, a hand grip being provided at 4. The casing 1 comprises a lower chamber having a removable end wall 7 and is provided with roller bearings 11 for a socket 12 which is integral with a worm wheel 13. Grooves formed in the socket are adapted to receive the ribs 17 of a threading cutter 15 which is held against axial movement by a spring plunger 30. The cutter is fitted with die segments 21 which are retained by a ring 22 and screws 22<1>. In place of the thread cutter, the socket may be fitted with an adapter 16, Fig. 7, having a non-circular bore 25 accommodating the shank of a reamer or other tool. The worm wheel 13 is driven by a worm 34 on a shaft 33 mounted in antifriction bearings in the upper part of the casing. For high-speed drilling or similar operations a cap 40 located at one end of the worm shaft may be removed and a bushing 41, Fig. 6, screwed into the casing, the bushing having bearings for a spindle 42 carrying a drill chuck 43 and having a driving projection 48 adapted to engage a recess in the worm shaft. The inner end of the worm shaft extends into a chamber 49 closed by a removable plate 50 which is bored to receive the end of the shank 2 and has a bearing 53 for the end of the driving shaft 54 of the motor 3. The end of the driving shaft is recessed to engage a projection on the worm spindle and when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 6 for highspeed operation, a wheel 57 on the driving shaft lies within a recess formed in a wheel 58 keyed to the worm shaft. In order to obtain a lower speed of operation, the plate 50 may be secured as shown in Fig. 3, and in this position the wheel 57 drives the wheel 58 through idlers 60. For threading operations the low speed is preferably employed, but for pipe-cutting, the direct drive shown in Fig. 6 is used. In a modification the shank 2 may be dispensed with and the motor casing secured directly to the plate 50.
