Abstract
343,758. Railway sleeping- cars. SCHWEIZERISCHE WAGONS- & AUFZUGEFABRIK AKT.-GES. SCHLIERENZURICH, Schlieren, Zurich, Switzerland. Feb. 27, 1930, No. 6586. Convention date, Nov. 2,1929. [Class 103 (iv).] In a railway sleeping-car having end entrances the central portion between the bogies is depressed below the level of the end platforms 1, Fig. 4, so as to furnish at this part the necessary height for the provision on one side of a lower side corridor 4, Fig. 6, giving access to a series of lower sleeping compartments 5, and on the other side of an upper side corridor 15 giving access to sleeping compartments 16 located partly above the corridor 4 and partly above the lower sleeping compartments 5. Steps to and tu lead respectively from the end platforms to the upper and lower corridors, while there is a step down on entering the lower compartments 5 and a step up on entering the upper compartments 16, further stepped or raised portions of the floor being disposed at the outer sides of all these compartments for accommodating seats 7 adjacent to the berths 6. In order to maintain the full height of the corridor 4 at the ends of the car over the bogies, the lower sleeping compartments 5 are restricted to the central portion of the car and give place at the ends thereof to spaces 13 in which braking apparatus, batteries, and other accessories are accommodated. The partitions 12 between the dressing spaces of adjacent sleeping compartments are shaped as shown in Fig. 4 so that lavatories 9, 10 may be arranged close together, but one in each compartment, while flaps 12a in these partitions may be opened for speaking communication between the compartments. The partitions 22 between the berths 6 of adjacent compartments are formed with detachable upper portions which may be lowered when it is desired to convert two single-berth compartments into one double-berth compartment. Toilets 100 are located near each end' of the car with water reservoirs above them.
