Abstract
343,479. Four-stroke engines ; piston pumps. BUCHI, A., 20, Salstrasse, Winterthur, Switzerland. Oct. 16, 1929, No. 31503. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1928. [Class 7 (ii).] In a multi-cylinder double-acting engine in which the charge is supplied by exhaust-driven turbocompressers, the exhaust and induction pipes of those upper or lower groups of combustion chambers in which ignition occurs at intervals of not less than 150‹ of crank-shaft rotation lead to common exhaust turbine chambers and from common compresser units respectively. In a four-cylinder engine, Fig. 1, the common exhaust pipes 9, 10 of those cylinders whose cranks are separated by 180‹, namely 1, 2 and 3, 4, lead to exhaust chambers 5, 6, whilst from the two compresser units 7, 8 branched induction pipes lead to the corresponding combustion chambers. In a six-cylinder engine, two turbines each having two turbine chambers may be provided, into each of which three combustion spaces exhaust ; in an eight-cylinder engine, two exhaust turbines with two chambers in each may be provided, the combustion spaces of two cylinders exhausting into each of the four chambers ; or two chambers only may be used, one for each group of four cylinders. In a twelve cylinder engine, two turbines each having three chambers may be used, four combustion spaces exhausting into each chamber.
