Abstract

342,925. Beacon lights for aerial navigation. MALLINCKRODT, F. VON, 9, Martin Lutherstrasse, Schoneberg, Berlin. Feb. 26, 1930, No. 6397. [Classes 75 (iii) and 75 (iv).] A route-indicating beacon light for aircraft comprises a source of light and a reflector or a lens contained in a rotatable casing so as to project a beam moving in a plane approximately at rightangles to the ground. The source of light, or an additional one, may be adapted to project a horizontal beam simultaneously or in succession with the vertical beam. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a source of light 1 is fixed within a drum 2 which carries one or more lenses 3, 4 and is rotated about a horizontal axle 6 by means of an electric motor 10, a reflector 11 being provided to produce the horizontal beam. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a reflector 13 carrying a source of light is rotated about a horizontal spindle 14 by means of a motor 18 which also rotates a second reflector 19 and source of light about a vertical axis. The beacon light is mounted on a raised platform or tower, and the source of light preferably comprises a multifilament electric lamp bulb. The vertical and horizontal beams of light may be coloured to provide signal or other indications. The vertical beam may move through an arc of slightly less than 180‹, and, when a horizontal beam is not required, the light may be cut off during the period that the beam is directed downwardly. Several such beacons may be arranged side by side and driven separately or by the same motor at different speeds and in different directions for indicating branches or deviations of the route or for other purposes, the beams meeting in any desired direction such as the vertical.
