Abstract

Amines are prepared by heating a primary or secondary alcohol with ammonia or a primary amine in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst other than nickel. Copper, cobalt and iron are mentioned as suitable. Examples are given of the preparation of cyclohexylaniline and cyclohexylamine by heating cyclohexanol under pressure with aniline and ammonia respectively in the presence of copper.
