Abstract
Artificial filaments, films, or the like of reduced lustre are produced by incorporating with the spinning solution, titanium oxide or mixtures or compounds thereof in the finely divided form. The filaments &c. may be produced by wet or dry spinning processes, and the invention is particularly applicable to spinning solutions containing cellulose acetate or other esters or ethers of cellulose. The titanium oxide which is present, for example, from about 0,5 to 5 per cent calculated on the weight of the basic material of the spinning solution, may be incorporated by any suitable means, for example, an aqueous paste of the pigment is worked up with part of the solvent used, and the paste so obtained, in which the water is partially or completely replaced by the solvent, is directly incorporated in the spinning solution. When grinding the titanium oxide in the presence of liquids it is preferable to work in the presence of a dispersator and/or protective colloid such as Turkey red oil, and/or in the presence of oils such as oleic acid, linseed oil, or olive oil. The aqueous or oily paste may then be worked up with part of the solvent used for making up the spinning solution. The titanium oxide, alone or in admixture or in compound form, when obtained by precipitation, should be subjected to calcination at temperatures, for example, of from 600 DEG to 1100 DEG C., and if desired, in the presence of calcium phosphate to inhibit colour change. Examples of admixtures to the titanium oxide are: zinc oxide or carbonate, boric acid or a borate such as barium or calcium borate, and also colour correcting or modifying substances. Suitable compounds of titanium mentioned are calcium and barium titanate. According to the Provisional Specification, finely divided pigments other than titanium pigments may be used in the process. The following mixed titanium pigments are also mentioned:-titanium oxide and silica; titanium oxide, magnesia and silica; titanium oxide, silica and a silicate. Specifications 326,461, 326,462, 328,247, 333,504 and 334,195, [all in Class 2 (ii) Cellulose &c.], are referred to.
