Abstract

339,516. Bloxam, A. G., (Soc. of Chemical Industry in Basle). Dec. 24, 1929. Sulphuretted benzanthrone dyes.-The bluegreen vat-dyestuffs obtained by sulphurizing 2- methylbenzanthrone or a derivative thereof containing a replaceable substituent in the Bz1- position (according to Specifications 20094/08, 11422/11 and 15979/11) are converted into more valuable products by dissolving them in sulphuric acid and diluting this solution cautiously with water or aqueous sulphuric acid, so as to precipitate the dyestuff but to retain impurities in solution; or by treating them with a reducing agent in presence of an alkali and then separating the leuco compound thus precipitated from the secondary dyestuffs remaining in solution and, if necessary, oxidizing the leuco compound. The processes are illustrated in examples and in the case of the second process sodium hydrosulphite is employed as reducing agent. A further example illustrates the use of the products in the dyeing of cotton. The products may also be used in printing, and dye fast blue-green tints which are purer than those of the parent materials.
