Abstract

Turbidometers.-The concentration of suspensions which furnish sediments is determined by utilizing the variations in conductivity according to the position of the sediment in relation to the directive of the current. Two small glass tubes t, Fig. 1, of identical dimensions are closed at each end by metal plates n held in place by screwed covers p. These tubes are filled with the suspension to be tested and are connected in two arms of a wheatstone bridge, one tube being arranged vertically and one horizontally. Two pairs of tubes 1, 3, and 2, 4, Fig. 3, may be employed so as to permit simultaneous comparison of two different suspensions or of the same suspension under different conditions. The tubes are held between plates a in a wooden frame r which is removably mounted on a base m between stops k. The concentration is deduced from the ratio of the conductivity of the vertical and horizontal tubes and the height of the sediment in the vertical tube, which is graduated. The apparatus is applicable for determining the cell volume of blood and the fat content of milk and other emulsions.
