Pressure gauges.-In a pressure cooker, Fig. 1, the securing screw 5 is operated by means of wings 19, and when pressure exists within the vessel the operation of the screw is prevented by a detent 18 which is pushed upward by a piston 17 into the path of the wings 19. The member 18 provides an optical indication of the pressure within the vessel, or it may actuate another indicating member. In a modification. Fig. 3, the piston 14 acts on the arm 18<1> of a lever pivoted at 20 on the cross bar 1 and the other arm 18 of the lever is deflected into the path of the wings 19<1>. In a modified form, Fig. 9, of the indicator and detent for preventing premature opening, a spindle 26 carrying a conical part 14 and head 16, passes through a screwed plug 12. A surrounding ring 29 is provided with a handle 30 and with a pin 31 engaging a helical groove 25 in the plug 12. The ring 29 is rotated to its highest position when closing the vessel, and if pressure is to be tested, the ring 29 is rotated to its lowest position, when the pressure maintains the spindle 26 in its raised position to lock the screw 5, Fig. 1, and to provide an optical indication.
