Grates.-A firebasket having front and bottom bars, a closed back, and sides which may be also closed or formed with bars, comprises similar interchangeable widely-spaced front bars A, A1, A2, bottom bars H, tie-rods E, E1 for holding the bars together, and spacers to determine their spacing. In the construction shown, the grate comprises alternate members as shown in Fig. 3, each comprising a front bar A, a bottom bar H, a back member M, and bosses 3 forming spacers through which the tie-rods pass. The other alternate members comprise onlya bottom bar and a back member L, with corresponding bosses, the spacing of the front bars being thus twice that of the bottom bars. The back members' M are grooved vertically to receive the edges of the alternate members L, Fig. 6, thus forming a closed back, the individual parts of which can expand relatively to one another and so avoid breakage. Air apertures may be formed in the lower part of the back. The front bars are substantially vertical, but may bulge forward as shown in Fig. 3 to allow each to fall freely. They are preferably of elongated section with the major axis directed from front to rear. The firebasket shown is provided with side grates formed with legs, and secured by the tie-bars. A grate comprising a similar construction of front and bottom bars may be used with brick sides and back.
