Abstract
338,247. Cowper, E. O. June 5, 1929. Roads and ways, special materials for. - One or more substances from each of the two classes of nominally waste or by-product materialsenumerated below are mixed and bonded with raw rubber (i.e. latex from which the serum constituents have not been removed), to provide a material for grounds for athletics and games, for damping vibrations in roads, for expansion joints. in concrete roads, for wall and roof coverings, machinery beds, and other analogous uses. Vulcanizing ingredients, pigments, and bituminous. or Portland cement, may be added and the vulcanization of the latex rubber, which process is stated to be optional, may be partial or complete.. The basic materials are used in crumbed, crushed, or powdered form and comprise (a) waste rubber, rubber scrap, old tyre stock, or the like, and (b). breeze, ashes, clinker, brick dust, baked clay, slate-dust or like crushable earthy or mineral absorbent material. The raw rubber, preferably diluted, may be applied to the mixed basic materials, after compression, in situ, or may be added to either of the basic ingredients, or to both, at the time of mixing, which may be performed on the site or elsewhere, in which latter case the material may be stored in drums. Peat or seaweed may be added as additional fillers. The plastic mass may be applied to a canvas,. felt, tar paper, or like backing, which has preferably been treated with bituminous cement, toprovide a material which can be sold in rolls in the same manner as roofing felt. Bricks, blocks, slabs, &c. may be made of the material. A mixture stated to be applicable for sheeting is : crumbed rubber 7 parts, breeze or the like 3 parts, cement (optional) ¢ part, raw rubber 2 parts, and water to dilute; the parts given are by volume. Other examples are quoted in the Specification. Partial vulcanization results in a permanently sticky or tacky material. The resilience of the material depends upon therelative proportions of the basic ingredients, and the finished material may be in layers of graded resilience. An unbonded mixture of the basic substances may be applied as a loose surfacing upon a layer of the bonded material for dirt tracks or the like, or may be used as a bedding layerbetween a bonded mixture and a foundation. A dry mixture may also be applied as a grouting between paving blocks or setts and be impregnated with raw rubber in situ. The second Provisional Specification mentions shingle, crushed flints, and sand as additional fillers.
