Electromagnets; reciprocating machines. - In an electromagnetically operated tool which requires an accurate rectilinear motion, such as used for cutting, depositing, stamping or embossing fabrics, plastic materials &c., a main solenoid has a guided core with a tubular nonmagnetic extension to which the tool is attached, and this extension also serves as a guide for the core of an auxiliary solenoid which may also operate a tool. In the form shown, the cylindrical core A of the main solenoid B slides on fixed guides E and has a nonmagnetic extension C to which the main tool D is attached. This extension, which also serves as a guide for the core K of the auxiliary solenoid J, is guided by a bush H. The solenoid J operates an auxiliary tool M, the auxiliary solenoid core being returned by the spring S. A ring N, fixed to the core extension C, and a spring-controlled pawl P actuated by an electromagnet Q serve to restrain the core A after it has returned a part of its stroke, but when the auxiliary solenoid has been operated, the electromagnet Q releases the core A. The solenoids B and J are operated in sequence by remote control and are energized momentarily. The tool may be turned horizontally by rotating the flange F by mechanical means, the screw X in the hub portion of the flange being first removed. In a modified form not employing an auxiliary solenoid, the flange F carrying the guides E has teeth cut on its periphery so that it can be rotated by a worm.
