Compositions containing cellulose esters.- Plastic masses are prepared by incorporating with a cellulose ester a polymerized vinyl compound or compounds, with or without plasticizers and (or) softening agents. The polymerized vinyl compounds may be. derived from vinyl acetate, propionate, phthalate, phosphate, chloride, or bromide, styrene, or the products obtained by dehalogenating vinyl halides, for instance by means of zinc. The polymerization may be carried to any desired degree, and may be effected after incorporating the vinyl compound with the cellulose ester; alternatively, a partly polymerized vinyl compound may be further polymerized after incorporation. The plasticizers and (or) softening agents used may be triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate, triacetin, and amides or sulphonamides, such as thiocarbanilide and toluene methylsulphonamide, and in addition the masses may include, as desired, fillers, pigments, gums, resins, etc., and anti-acid substances such as urea or calcium lactate. The incorporation may be effected with the aid of volatile liquids, such as alcohol, acetone, benzene, methylene dichloride, or chloroform. An example is given describing the manufacture of a plastic mass containing cellulose acetate and polymerized vinyl acetate; the manufacture of plastic masses from cellulose nitrate, formate, propionate, and butyrate is mentioned.
