Feeding and winding webs.-In a machine for slitting fabric for tyres &c. the web is drawn from rolls 1, 1<a> over a joining-up table 9, through slitters 11, and alternate strips are. led through festoon devices 33 to measuring devices 60 and thence to winding spools 65. The measuring devices through electrical connections actuate means for terminating spooling. As shown in Fig. 1 the slitters consist of knives 12 secured to a floating carriage supported on antifriction rollers. The knives follow the depressions in the material. The festoon device, Fig. 5, not shown, comprises a vertically movable roller 34 which engages a loop in the fabric. The roller is maintained horizontal by chains engaging a sprocket. When too much material is looped the roller 34 actuates a lever 45 to operate a switch 43 controlling an electromotor 7 driving the machine through appropriate gearing. The machine is restarted by hand-rods 50. The measuring devices consist of a measuring wheel 60, Fig. 8, not shown, mounted on a head 55 pivoted on a pin 54<a> and driving a contact arm 62. When the required length has been spooled the arm 62 actuates a switch 64 in circuit with a solenoid. The strips are wound on spools 65 carried by a tray 67 pivoted on a pin 68 and held in position by a toggle 75 and a pivoted solenoid 80. The spools are rotated by driven rolls 66. When the switch 64 is actuated the toggle straightens over the dead centre to lift the spools 65 from the rolls 66 to stop spooling. A bias cutting device is fitted. Between the slitters and the festoon device the strips are turned vertically by rollers 30.
