334,691. Gramophone Co., Ltd., White, J., and Payne, E. M. Aug. 20, 1929. Electromagnets.- An electromagnetic acoustic device comprising a magnetic core surrounded over part of its length by a coil of magnetic material, the cross-section of the core within the coil being reduced. In the gramophone pick-up shown in Fig. 1, a U-shaped permanent magnet 1 has a pole-piece 2 of U-shape. The pole-piece limbs are provided with slots leaving a narrow strip 3 and coils 4 of magnetic material are wound to fill the slots, and may project beyond the upper and lower faces of the pole pieces. Alternatively, the faces of the coils themselves may form pole surfaces (Fig. 3, not shown). The coils may be wound on bobbins wholly or partly of magnetic material, and may serve as magnetizing coils.
