Filters having sheet filtering - materials. - The bulk of the liquid is separated from granules contained therein as the mixture flows through a perforated channel 1 arranged substantially horizontally in a receptacle 2 and provided with means for delivering the mixture to a position in the channel that can be varied so that the bulk of the liquid will be removed through the perforations and the remainder will carry the granules to and over the end of the channel to means for removing the remainder of the liquid. The channel may be of perforated sheet metal or wire tissue with oblong apertures extending longitudinally and the sliding of the granules may be facilitated by leaving the whole or part of the lower portion of the channel unperforated. Interchangeable extension pieces 7 of different length may be provided for the inlet 3, so that the free length of the channel may be varied according to the rate of flow. The final separating apparatus may comprise a succession of inclined stationary tubular sieves 8, 9 arranged in cascade in a casing 10 with outlets 13, 14.
